The Ruppberg, standing 866 meters tall, is considered the local mountain of the town of Zella-Mehlis. Many hiking trails lead to its tree-free summit, which technically lies within the boundaries of the neighboring town of Steinbach-Hallenberg.

At the summit, the Ruppberg Association serves hikers food and drink at the Ruppberghütte on weekends. On clear days, at the peak hikers enjoy a unique panoramic view over Suhl all the way to Coburg, the Wasserkuppe, and the Rhön.

The Celts are said to have already built a hillfort on the Ruppberg in ancient times. A legend trail leads from the Ruppberg car park to the summit, where illustrated panels tell stories of the robber knight Ruppertus and other curious tales.

We especially recommend the hike up to the Ruppberg from our holiday homes on weekends, when you can reward yourself with a snack and drinks at the hut upon arrival.
